Thrift shops are hardly a new phenomenon. When I was growing up, my grandfather Robert Baughman ran the county junk store, The Old Mill Shop, in what had been Baughman Mill. You never knew what treasures he would bring in after buying a carload of "the rest of the sale”.
My name is David Rankin, and I've spent the last 30 years collecting and listening to music. Over the last twenty years, there have been four great trends in music for listeners: digital music players and music on cell phones, the restoration of "lost" recording (old and newer), the availability of free recordings, and music streaming services. We aren't stuck with the 100 songs of current "top 40” music.
Let's take a journey through 100 years of great music. We will look at the places we can look to find free and low-cost copies of music, as well as how to find different genres in streaming services and video sites. Finally, we will discuss those songs in my collection (and other peoples’) that you may never have heard, but should hear and probably will love.
In honor of my grandfather, and all of the junk stores and thrift stores old and new, we are calling this podcast The Old Mill Shop. Let's go exploring a world of good music together, on The Old Mill Shop.
The pictures on this website are of the Baughman Mill, the original home of The Old Mill Shop. Significant portions of the structure as it was when the Old Mill Shop was in business have had to be removed due to the effects of time, as were the rail yard and other outbuildings beside the Mill. The original brick and log Mill structure has been restored to its current status, prepared for the next 150 years.
On behalf of the entire Baughman family, we wish to express our extreme gratitude to the historical society in Lincoln County and those artisans and workers who worked to restore the mill to its current condition.
